200 students to receive English Literacy Certificate

students Tuesday, June 8, at the English Literacy Certificate Ceremony.
The adult students come from around the world. Home countries for these students include Afghanistan,
Argentina, Burma, Chad, China, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Iraq, Macedonia,
Malaysia, Mexico, Monland, Myanmar, Somalia, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Thailand, Vietnam and Yemen.
Adult & Continuing Education serves about 600 students who are new to the English language, and those who
complete various levels of learning the language are invited to participate in the certificate program.
Students' abilities range from mastering basic English language skills, such as recognizing and writing
the alphabet, to mastering enough of the language to meet most survival needs and social demands.
"Learning the English language as an adult is challenging and takes many hours of study," said Dr.
Bonnie Rogers, Continuing Education Coordinator. "These adult students, however, are dedicated to learning
English. Each have their own personal stories for how they reached this point in their lives and why learning
English now is so important to them."
The event will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, in the auditorium at the Anthis Career Center, 1200 S. Barr
St.
