Dyslexia Assessment

We are committed to your child’s academic success and are glad to have the opportunity to provide your child with the support they need to be successful. As part of new legislation passed in the most recent assembly, SEA 217 provides guidance for testing students in grades K-2 for Dyslexia in an effort to provide earlier support for learners. We have created an informational page with links to resources to help with your questions. To learn more about the required assessment and to view resources, please visit here

Additional Parent Resources

IDOE’s literacy team has created Literacy Family Guides for each elementary grade level K-5. These guides share grade-level skills and ideas for how parents can get involved in their child’s education. Spanish translations are coming soon.

DreamBox is an adaptive, online resource our elementary schools are using to further students’ mathematical understanding. Students spend 20-25 minutes twice a week during class time working on individualized activities. In addition, students can work on DreamBox from home for additional practice. When students consistently use DreamBox, they could gain 10-12% growth in their mathematical understanding or master 1-3 mathematics standards.

Before & After School Y Care

FWCS partners with the YMCA to provide childcare before and after school at many elementary schools, including half-day programs for pre-K students. The program provides snacks, homework assistance and structured activities.

Voluntary Student Accident Insurance

All students are provided medical coverage for athletics and accidents that occur during the school day and while participating in school-sponsored events and athletics. This coverage is free of charge to students and is secondary to any other medical coverage the student may have. Coverage may not cover the total cost of all claims. Parents may purchase supplementary 24-hour student accident insurance through All Risk Insurance.

To obtain more information about this optional insurance visit the All Risk Insurance Information page

To purchase this supplementary Insurance visit All Risk Insurance.

Help For Students

We want your child to be successful, which is why we offer a variety of support programs to our students. If you feel your child is in need, read more about what we have to offer here (Academic Help). If you have questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher.

Study Connection
Each week, students who have been identified by teachers as needing extra help are bussed to the workplace of their tutors, area business people. Paired for a school year, tutor and student spend one hour together per week. Tutors offer homework assistance but even more importantly, the interest and focused attention of a caring adult.

Thank you for choosing Fort Wayne Community Schools! For more than 150 years, FWCS has prepared the children of Fort Wayne for successful careers in the arts, business, politics, medicine and other professional areas. Everything your child needs to be successful is right here at FWCS because We Are Your Schools.

At FWCS, we know that you are your child’s first teacher and value parental involvement in our schools. Whether you are able to volunteer in our classrooms, attend school events or support your child’s school in other ways, you are important to us.
