South Wayne Elementary students in grades 1-5 will participate in Learn-to-Swim program at the Helen P. Brown Natatorium at 9:30 a.m. Students will attend a 45-minute lesson each week from Sept. 23-Oct. 21.

Shambaugh Elementary will celebrate Red Ribbon Week October 21-25 with the theme Life is a Journey, Travel Drug Free!

Indian Village pre-K students will learn about their environments through their senses, such as listening, hearing, touching and hands-on experiences when they visit Kurtz’s Pumpkin Farm in New Haven at 9:30 a.m. They will also identify plants and animals as living things.

Bunche kindergarten students will visit with the 6-9 cluster (first-third grades) at Towles Montessori Intermediate School at 11:55 a.m. Visiting Towles helps ease the stress of making the transition to the 6-9 cluster. While there, students will explore pumpkins using their senses and will also learn about the life cycle of the pumpkin.

Harris Elementary kindergarten students will visit the outdoor classroom at Concordia High School at 10 a.m. to learn about insects in their natural habitat.

Jefferson Middle School will host the FWCS Jr. Spell Bowl Scrimmage on at 4 p.m. to help prepare students for the regional Spell Bowl competition. Participating schools are Blackhawk, Jefferson, Kekionga, Lakeside, Lane, Memorial Park, Miami and Shawnee.

Haley Elementary School will celebrate its 50th anniversary with an open house Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 5-7 p.m. All are welcome to attend to see the school’s renovations, visit with old friends and former staff members, enjoy birthday cake, and check out the contents of the time capsule holding items from 25 and 50 years ago. Hawkins Famous Fish, Whip & Chill and Monterrico food trucks will also be at the school with food available for purchase.

Families are invited to attend Levan Scott Academy’s annual Title I Family Night - Math Tricks and Treats! Students and families are invited to dress up in costumes and visit classrooms to complete grade-specific math games to collect Halloween treats. Attendees will receive free books and enjoy light refreshments. The event starts at 4:30 p.m.

Shambaugh Elementary PTA meets at 6:30 p.m. in the staff lounge. Join us with your ideas!

New Tech Academy at Wayne GeoCad students are learning basic Computer-Aided Design (CAD) skills to design a puzzle and then creating those puzzles with wooden blocks. At 9:45 a.m., New Tech students will work one on one with third-graders at Arlington Elementary to solve the puzzles. They will then help them use arrays to teach multiplication to match the third-grade standards.

Whitney Young Early Childhood Center kindergarten students will travel to the Helen P. Brown Natatorium at 9 a.m. each Thursday for six weeks. Students will learn water safety and how to swim.

South Wayne Elementary will host a Math Night for families at 6 p.m. Families are invited come and challenge students in math problems or math-related challenges while learning how to help students at home. Math snacks, math literature and math fun will fill the evening.

Shambaugh students and staff will wear their favorite Shambaugh shirts to show their school spirit. They will also enjoy popcorn day.

Shambaugh staff and students will participate in the Fall Harvest classroom party and activities at 2 p.m.

The cat is out of the bag! Haley Elementary is having Dress Like an Idiom Day! Students will search for clever ideas to be sure their costumes hit the nail on the head.

Harris Special Education students will visit the Helen P. Brown Natatorium for swim lessons at 11:15 a.m. This is a six-week program for students.

Weisser Park Elementary will host Focus On Health, sponsored by Parkview Health. From 8:45 a.m.-noon, there will be health stations set up in the gym, and there will be 20-minute Hazards in the Home station by the Fort Wayne Fire Department.
