Students in the Fort Wayne Community Schools Construction Trades programs will soon be using their skills to earn a spot to compete at the SkillsUSA Indiana State Leadership and Skills Conference in Indianapolis.

The FWCS Career Academy is hosting the annual SkillsUSA Regional Competition Saturday, Feb. 4, from 8 a.m.-noon at the Career Academy Construction Trades facility, 125 Murray St. 

Nearly 50 students will compete in the areas of carpentry, cabinetmaking, electrical, sheet metal, plumbing, masonry and team works.   

Competitions will also take place at Ivy Tech and at the Local 166 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union.

The event is open to the public and admission is free.

With nearly 30,000 students, Fort Wayne Community Schools is one of the largest school districts in Indiana. FWCS proudly allows families to choose any of its 50 schools through its successful school-choice program creating diversity in each school, including some with more than 75 languages spoken. FWCS offers seven magnet schools focusing on areas such as science and math, communication, fine arts or Montessori at the elementary and middle school level. In high school, students can choose from the prestigious International Baccalaureate program, Project Lead the Way or New Tech Academy as well as other rigorous academic and specialty training programs.
